چکیده

We have combined aircraft and airborne Doppler radar observations to show that microinsects in the atmospheric convective boundary layer (CBL) are concentrated in rather welldeÞned plumes, that these plumes are generally found in thermals of rising air, and that the insects in those plumes oppose the updrafts at a rate that increases as the updrafts become stronger. In this paper, a simple numerical simulation of the airßow Þeld and insect concentration in the CBL is developed. The model shows a consistency of the observed insect ßight behavior with the presence of well-deÞned insect plumes in the otherwise well-mixed CBL and with the tendency of insects to cluster in updrafts. Themodel also explains the growth of insect plumes in themorning hours and their disappearance in the late afternoon. Other studies have proposed that the response of insects to being lofted high into the CBL is controlled by air temperature. Our simulation shows that a temperaturesensitive response alone does not yield well-deÞned plumes in regions of rising air currents. The observed ßight strategymay be counterintuitive, but we suggest that it has a clear adaptive advantage.

Approximate solution of laminar thermal boundary layer over a thin plate heated from below by convection

In this paper, an integration of a symbolic power series method - Padé approximation technique (PS - Padé), was utilized to solve a system of nonlinear differential equations arising from the similarity solution of laminar thermal boundary layer over a flat plate subjected to a convective surface boundary condition. As both boundary conditions tended to infinity, the combination of series solut...

Numerical Simulation of MHD Boundary ‎Layer Stagnation Flow of Nanofluid over a ‎Stretching Sheet with Slip and Convective ‎Boundary Conditions

An investigation is carried out on MHD stagnation point flow of water-based nanofluids in which the heat and mass transfer includes the effects of slip and convective boundary conditions. Employing the similarity variables, the governing partial differential equations including continuity, momentum, energy, and concentration have been reduced to ordinary ones and solved by using...

Simulation of entrainment near a density stratified layer: Laboratory experiment and LIDAR observation

In this paper a simple qualitative model of the growth of a mixed layer adjacent to a uniform layer with a stably stratified layer is presented. The depth variations of mixed layer can be estimated from direct measurements. The Entrainment of a stably stratified layer into a turbulent mixed layer in a confined region was studied in laboratory for different Richardson numbers. The internal waves...

QUANTITATIVE ECOLOGY Airborne Radar Observations of the Flight Behavior of Small Insects in the Atmospheric Convective Boundary Layer

The vertical ßight behavior of insects in the convective boundary layer (CBL) is examined by means of proÞling airborne Doppler radar data collected in the central Great Plains in late spring. On fair-weather days, the CBL grows from the ground up in morning hours and matures at a depth of 1,000Ð1,500 m shortly after midday. It is well mixed by thermals bubbling up from near the surface. Nevert...
